Colored Diamond In The Rough

Diamonds are one of nature’s rarest and hardest material. Diamonds form over billions of years under tremendous heat and pressure almost 200 km under the earth’s surface. Volatile volcanic eruptions brought diamond-bearing rocks known as kimberlite stones to the earth’s surface. Of all the diamonds mined today, the rarest are naturally colored diamonds. To understand how precious they are, for every 10,000 carats of diamonds that are cut only 1 carat is a colored diamond! The last colored diamond mine found was over 20 years ago, increasing the value of colored diamonds through diminishing supplies.

Cutting And Polishing

Once the natural colored diamonds are mined and sorted, a gem quality rough diamond will be converted into a gem through a multi-step process called “cutting”. Each diamond is assessed before cutting to optimize its luster and beauty. This highly delicate procedure requires skills, scientific knowledge, tools and experience. The weight reduction when cutting can be up to 50% of the original stone. Through history, popularity in different types of cuts have evolved, with the most popular today being the 58 cut brilliant stone. After cutting, the diamond is then shaped in different stages of polishing. This cut and polish step can take anywhere from several hours to years for the most intricate gems.

Finished Gem

Natural colored diamonds are some of nature’s most rare and coveted treasures. Once it has been turned from a rough diamond into a gem, it is then ready to be taken to a lab to be assessed and certified. As a tangible hard asset, natural colored diamonds have increased their value over the years, and rare natural colored diamonds have increased their value exponentially.

Certification
